Her leadership service came at a pivotal time when Chesapeake As director, she proved to be an excellent leader who was revered by the more than 120 employees she supervised. With that promotion, Claire became Chesapeake’s first African American female department head. In 1985, she was named director of a new division that comprised of both the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department and the Building Maintenance Department. During her stint as a recreation specialist, parents of every hue knew if their kids were at the Rec Center, not only were they in good hands, but their children would not want to leave the facility until closing hours.Ĭlaire’s reputation and talents garnered the attention of Chesapeake’s city manager who moved her to the Western Branch Community Center and then promoted her to district supervisor. Her faithful stewardship and guidance transformed that facility into a “Haven away from Home” for many youth. At the Indian River Community Center, it was quite apparent that her work was more than just a job, it was her calling as she became known as the “godmother and surrogate mother” for thousands of children who frequented the Indian River Rec Center. With style and finesse, Claire quietly broke each glass ceiling in her pathway. This position was the impetus of her paving the way for many women and people of color as she excelled in each leadership role assigned to her. In 1976, Claire accepted a role of recreation specialist at the City of Chesapeake’s Parks and Recreation Department. After three years of teaching, she was drawn to Virginia where became a substitute teacher and later joined the staff of the Portsmouth Parks & Recreation Department. She inspired students in the classroom and led her girls’ basketball team to a championship title.
Throughout her career, she furthered her education via certifications, workshops and seminars and later led many of the same to help others grow.įresh out of college, Claire landed her first job as a teacher and coach at Bentley High School in Chester, SC. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Shaw University in 1966. An accomplished athlete lettering in track, basketball, and cheerleading, Claire graduated in 1962 from Clearview High School. As a youth, she was active in the choir, Sunday school, and children’s ministries at the Easley Union Missionary Baptist Church. She was born October 9, 1944, in Easley, SC, to the late Edward Ernest “Rat” Robinson and Thelma Morgan Robinson.Īffectionately called by her middle name “Dedidra”, Claire leaves a legacy not only here in Hampton Roads, but also in South Carolina.
